Is a Chow Chow a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 25th, 2010

If you would like to have a true friend that will protect you at any cost in any dangers, then Chow Chow is a good breed for you. They can become very attached and devoted to a family member – although they will love and protect all members if given enough love and praise. Apart from this, they tend to be lazy and relatively inactive – they love to be in the house all day. They are very loyal, patient and polite, but can be really bossy and dominant if feel neglected. They don’t like other dogs or animals around them – except if they are raised together from an early age.

The Chow Chow has a thick, coarse, double coat that causes very heavy seasonal shedding, so during spring and autumn daily brushing is required. They are relatively healthy, but prone to health issues like hip dysplasia, heart diseases or allergies.

Training this breed is very hard, as these dogs are dominant, so they require a heavy-handed, yet consistent and calm trainer, otherwise they can become aggressive. Therefore obedience training and socialization is a must from the early ages.

All in all, this breed is very nice and will become a god companion if treated with love and fairness. Apart from that, all you have to provide them is a small, well-fenced yard and short, daily walks with you.

I hope that this article will be helpful for you and will help you decide whether Chow Chow is the best breed for you.

Are Chow Chow puppies with pink tongues pure breeds?

Big Dog | January 25th, 2010

Chow Chows are considered a heavenly dog that helped lick up the pieces of the sky, giving their tongues the unique blue-black color it is today. This is one of the main characteristics that is sought after by Chow Chow owners. If you are looking for a Chow Chow puppy and notice that its tongue is pink, don’t immediately write them off as being a mixed breed. Chow Chow puppies are born with pink tongues.

And as they grow older to approximately 8 to 10 weeks, they start to darken. But if you are very peculiar about getting a purebred, then just don’t take anyone’s word regarding the tongue color and the age. Its best that you make sure you are dealing with a reliable breeder who can show you documentation about the lineage of the dog. That way, you can rest assure that you are getting a genuine Chow Chow!

Black pups are easy to recognise, when they are just born. They are shiny black. Red pups are dark at birth but when they are dry, the color can be light red, dark red or darkbrown. Somtimes they have a black mask at birth; however, this fades away as they mature.Blue pups are gray at birth, when they are dry they are blue-gray. This is a rare color. Their ears and nails are dark. Fawn (cinnamon) pups look a lot like blues at birth, both can look gray. There are “red-fawns” (red-cinnamon) and “blue-fawns” (blue-cinnamon). The red-fawn (red-cinnamon) has a pinkish color on the cheeks and the back of the forepaws. Blue-fawn (blue-cinnamon) looks a lot like a blue, but has gray ears and nails, a blue has much darker ears and nails.Cream pups are easy to recognise, usually white with darker (light red) ears.
