Are Chow Chows the only breed with blue tongues?

Ann | October 23rd, 2009

One probable example of how the term “blue blood” to royalty for dog breeds is the “blue tongue“.  The Chow Chow is known for its distinctive blue tongue and Chinese legend has it that when God created the world, he permitted one dog to lick up the pieces of the sky that fell to the earth as he painted it.  Until now the breed has that noble aura and dignified look.  Their blue tongues were also believed to drive away evil spirits when they bark.

The Shar Pei is also known to have the same colored tongue. However, the Shar Pei doesn’t share the same legend but it enjoys being known for its skin and coat. Translated to English, Shar Pei is “sand skin” or “shark skin”.  This functioned as a defense mechanism that allows them to escape being held due to its prickly feel.

Although both share a common physical trait, the Chow Chow and the Shar Pei have their own uniqueness that owners find astonishing.

The Colors of a Chow Chow

D Dog Fan | January 11th, 2008

The Chow Chow comes in a number of different and interesting colors. These can be: black, red, blue, fawn (cinammon) and cream. As can be seen from the picture, in a litter all of these colors can be present all at once!

Black pups are easy to recognise, when they are just born. They are shiny black. Red pups are dark at birth but when they are dry, the color can be light red, dark red or darkbrown. Somtimes they have a black mask at birth; however, this fades away as they mature.Blue pups are gray at birth, when they are dry they are blue-gray. This is a rare color. Their ears and nails are dark. Fawn (cinnamon) pups look a lot like blues at birth, both can look gray. There are “red-fawns” (red-cinnamon) and “blue-fawns” (blue-cinnamon). The red-fawn (red-cinnamon) has a pinkish color on the cheeks and the back of the forepaws. Blue-fawn (blue-cinnamon) looks a lot like a blue, but has gray ears and nails, a blue has much darker ears and nails.Cream pups are easy to recognise, usually white with darker (light red) ears.
