It truly is an ancient breed, as a matter of fact – according to the study of the canine genome which instituted “genetic fingerprints” for 85 breeds, Chow Chow is one for the 14 breeds that were ascertained to be a distinguished part of the ancient group. In all probability Chow Chow came from the ancient Tibetan mastiffs which are probably the ancestor of sptiz breeds like the Keeshond, Norwegian elkhound and Pomeranian.

Originally, the land of origin of the said breed is China. There were illustrations of it particularly in a bas-relief of the Han Dynasty. Chow Chow was depicted as a hunting dog for it was blessed with amazing scenting skill that is utilized in hunting game birds, date to 150 BCE. But its desirable qualities it not only limited to the good scenting ability, it is a very flexible breed that can do many kinds of work. Regrettably, it was also kept in China for its meat and fur.

It may seem that the breed came from the northern part of China but contrary to this notion, it is mostly seen in southern part of the country. Particularly in the trading port of Canton and it was frequently a part of the cargo of the ship and as time passed, it was eventually called “Chow Chow” – this came from the Chinese words that means assortment of items, from junks and bric-a-brac.

In 1880, Chow Chows were imported into England; it was depicted as a “Wild Dogs of China.” Queen Victoria, is a very dog-loving person, were interested in the breed and it was also displayed in the London Zoo. And that is the beginning of its fame, from England to United States of America where it was exhibited in 1890. But it was only in 1903 when the American Kennel Club acknowledged the breed, following by the formation of Chow Chow Club of America after 3 years. As of to date, the Chow Chow breed banged the 65th rank among the other breed that is recognized and registered by AKC.

If you would like to have a true friend that will protect you at any cost in any dangers, then Chow Chow is a good breed for you. They can become very attached and devoted to a family member – although they will love and protect all members if given enough love and praise. Apart from this, they tend to be lazy and relatively inactive – they love to be in the house all day. They are very loyal, patient and polite, but can be really bossy and dominant if feel neglected. They don’t like other dogs or animals around them – except if they are raised together from an early age.

The Chow Chow has a thick, coarse, double coat that causes very heavy seasonal shedding, so during spring and autumn daily brushing is required. They are relatively healthy, but prone to health issues like hip dysplasia, heart diseases or allergies.

Training this breed is very hard, as these dogs are dominant, so they require a heavy-handed, yet consistent and calm trainer, otherwise they can become aggressive. Therefore obedience training and socialization is a must from the early ages.

All in all, this breed is very nice and will become a god companion if treated with love and fairness. Apart from that, all you have to provide them is a small, well-fenced yard and short, daily walks with you.

I hope that this article will be helpful for you and will help you decide whether Chow Chow is the best breed for you.

Generally speaking, experts say that the average life spam of Chow Chow is 11-15 years. If we would like to be a bit more precise it is said to be an average of 12 years. However, many factors influence this number: living environment, feeding (type of food), exercise, and so on. One thing that is sure that it is advised to feed the dog with home-made dog food instead of the commercial ones in order to make our dog live longer. It is also very important to keep him/her fit and this is really not a big deal with Chows, as they don’t have a very high energy level. At least one daily walk is required though, but you will see it on your dog how much exercise he/she needs. The point is to make your Chow tired by the end of the day
All in all, try to do everything for your dog to be as healthy as possible!

The Chow Chow is originated from Mongolia and Tibet and it is known to be one of the oldest dog breeds, it is said to be among the first breeds to evolve from the wolf. The Chow Chow’s history goes back to 150 BC, when it was bred to be general-working dog. This expression includes quite a lot of things: protection of homes, pulling, herding and hunting.
The first dog arrived to England in the 1830’s and was named Chow Chow, because the part of clipper ship where he was carried was called chow chow.
This adorable breed became very popular in the 1920’s among the rich and famous in the US.
